Vintage Hair Inspiration: Retro Rolls

Ahhhh, victory rolls, poodles, twists and beehives, I love them all. I especially like elevated pin curls (a roll that sits up on top of your head rather than lying flat on your head) largely because they look good on the day, but because they make your hair wonderfully curly after you take them out too.

This is the type of thing I mean, somewhere between victory rolls and a poodle do:

So now that my hair is getting longer again I have decided to experiment with up dos again.

Here's a more recent attempt at an elevated curl up do:

I'm currently finding my fringe super annoying as I have decided to grow it out and it is too short to do anything with it yet. But soon it will be long enough to get it out the way. Hopefully. As soon as its long enough I'll probably want a fringe again...

Oh well.

(P.S. Look how grey I am!!!)

  1. That looks amazing! I don't do a lot with my hair, but you've inspired me. I love those elevated curls and I've always wanted to try them. Do you have any tips or tricks like products you use or if you got instructions anywhere that would help newbies like me? I'd really appreciate it! :) And I completely agree with you about the fringe! Every time it's fully grown out I find a reason to have it back, and when it's short it bugs me.

    1. Hi there, I'm glad you like it! Sorry for the late reply, but hopefully you will still see this! My top tip would be to leave your hair for a few days before you want to put it up as the texture from the *ahem* 'dirt' allows you to style easier. A spray of dry shampoo works wonders too!

I watched some tutorials from the Cherry Dollface on youtube, she has some really good ones and her one on victory rolls really helped me tie down the style.

      I hope that helps!

I think I will aim to do a tutorial/top tips post soon though :)

  2. This looks great. Silly question, which roll do you make first? I normally do the classic victory roll, one on each side, but would like to try something different. I'd love to see a tutorial for this style. :)

    1. Hello Emily, thanks for stopping by! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I hope you still see this!

I usually make the roll closest to the centre on the right hand side first (this is the side with the most hair). I find that this one is the hardest to place by far, and once it looks right the rest sort of come into place around it, especially the two at the front furthest from the centre.

I will attempt to have a go at a tutorial in a couple of weeks once I've gotten a few other posts done, hopefully you will stop by again to see it :)
