5 Vintage Hairstyles for Growing Out a Fringe

Okay, so here is my hair in its current state of play. Current state of mess more like... I have always hated the long process of growing out a fringe. Its boring, takes forever and it is the
reason I put off having a fringe back in. So now I want rid of that fringe and oh boy is it taking forever!

So I have now decided to make it my mission to find interesting things to do with my fringe. I think I know enough not to share some of them.

Let me know what you think, and if there is anything you want a tutorial of, please let me know in the comments.

1) Three pincurl fringe.
I separated the whole front section into 3 with a far right parting. I formed two down facing pincurls nearest my parting that allowed me to catch the parts of my fringe and the other one was facing up.

I also curled the back of my head to give it a it of a wave, although on this occasion that didn't work too well.

2) The pin-up bumper bang.
Using a hair rat hides so many wispy fringe bits! I rolled the side parts into victory rolls and then forward rolled the front part around a hair rat/filler to give it maximum fullness. I joined the sides of the roll together by fanning the hair out around the rat. If you want to try this style I fully recommend Vintageous's youtube tutorial. If it can help me do it, it can help you!

Here's that gorgeous Tiger Milly apple dress again too!

3) The victory roll.
This one is sort of a classic. I split my hair into two parts and rolled each half up to my parting. My hair is just long enough to be pinned at the back of the roll.

4) The pseudo-suicide roll.
Yet another use for that hair rat. In this case I separated all the top part of my hair forward and put it in a hair band to keep it in place. I then rolled it around the hair rat to create the side sweep bumper bang. Its not quite a suicide roll, as it should have a distinctive swirl at the end of it but its a simplified version that works with quite short fringe bits.

5 Asymmetric victory rolls.
This one is similar to number 3, but the victory rolls are to the side of your head. This one is actually easier to get your fringe into than the traditional symmetrical roll as you have longer parts to work with because of the position of the rolls. Whack a couple of hair flowers in there to complete the look.

Which one do you like best?
They will all work with a fully grown out fringe too!

Oh, and pretty please tell me your favourite dos for growing out a fringe!

Pin-curling and charity shopping!

Since it was the Easter holidays I have been to Brighton. I've really found myself missing Brighton since I moved back to the south. I think its because I'm so close, but 2 hours on a bus is just a bit too far for me to bother with a day trip so I'm really glad to be back for a bit.

One of the reasons I was so happy to visit again was to go shopping! During my time in Brighton I've managed to find a small selection of favourite shops that always have some good bargains. Perticular favourites include Snooper's Paradise in the North Laines and the charity shops around George street in Hove (especially Age UK and Oxfam).

This trip was not exception with some wonderful bargains to be had (thank you birthday money!)

I had also arranged with a friend to go out dancing on Monday night so I whacked up my hair in wet set pin curls to let it dry out (I also spritzed with a little setting lotion).

A few people asked me how I did this so I tried to take a picture of my hair...

I also included some pictures of how I style my hair too:
  1. Once it was dried I took the curls out - picture top left
  2. Then ran my fingers through to loosen up the curls - top right
  3. Then used a paddle brush to brush through the curls - bottom left
  4. And kept brushing until the curls smoothed out, I think added a little clip at on side - bottom right

And here is the finished look! Sorry its so yellow, the lighting in the hallway was terrible...

The dress in this picture is the Hobbs dress I got in a charity shop in Hove, it was an amazing find especially as such a flattering fit and one of my favourite colours!

Cardigan: Monsoon sale
Scarf: Lush gift wrap
Shoes: Hotter
Glasses: Lipsy25 via eBay

I finally think I'm getting there with this vintage setting thing, I just wish that my hair didn't fall out so quickly, but I'm looking into ways to help make it last a bit longer so watch this space!

1950s pincurl set and a polka dot dress

Ah... the pin curl... something I've often strived for but never really successfully managed.

I've curled my hair ever since I was in school. It was around the time that hair straighteners became a massive trend and rebelling agains all the girls in school with polka straight hair I started wearing my hair in curls. Ever the rebel.

Actually I just thought I wanted hair like Sailor Neptune:

Who wouldn't.

My method of choice, rags and the occasional bendy roller, but I stopped using these when I was introduced to the victory roll be a friend and I started using the standard up do day set, next day bouncy curls that so many vintage fans use. Somehow though, pin curls never really worked for me.

I don't know if it was because my hair was too long or I didn't have the right pins, but I just could not get them to work.

But then I tried again after I had my hair cut a couple of months ago and guess what, they worked! I'm going to blame seeing a scene on Masters of Sex where Virginia had curls around the hair line and I decided to give it a try.

If you aren't sure what I mean by pin curling then here is a picture of Marilyn Monroe curling her hair to demonstrate:

It is pretty much pinning little spirals of hair close to your hear so that they set over a period of time, in my case, over night. You then remove all the pins, unravel the curls and 'brush out'. Its the brishig out I'm really bad at generally, but with a bit of persistence it seems to work out okay.

So here is the results of my first really proper pin curl set:
Its pretty far from perfect, but its my best effort so far, and the curls brushed out really nicely!

Obligatory mirror #selfie I look like a total idiot with the most bemused expression I could manage:

(On a side note my phone case is a Megan Lara design from Red Bubble, her art work is bloody awesome!)

I'm not going to pretend that I know enough about setting the curls to discuss curl direction or how to plan to create a wave shape, but I am trying to learn, one day when I am amazing at this, and less lazy, I will try to post some kind of guide... maybe.

Last but not least, here's the rest of my outfit. Its a Laura Ashley dress with a poka dot print and my favourite M&S cardigan of the moment. What do you think?
